Varella was born in Thessaloniki in 1930 and was raised
in Athens. She has a degree in History and Archeology
from the University of Athens. She has been awarded by
the Women's Literary Company, the Greek Children's Book
Circle and the Ministry of Education for her "Learning
to read" series of books for the preliminary
classes. She has translated many foreign books and worked
in the educational section of many radio and t.v. Stations
and for many magazines.
In 1985, her book "My
friend, the Filbert-tree" was among the three
books that won the International Award of Children's Fiction
-Janusz Korczak- in Poland. In 1990 she was nominated
for the H. C. Andersen Award. In 1998 she was honoured
with the National Award of Children's Non-Fiction for
her book "Corinth".
