"Angeliki Varella wrote the book “My friend, the Filbert Tree”. Doros loves Fundu (the tree), who is in danger, and he saves her from the constructor, the bulldozer, the mechanic, the chopping. The chapters are small, swirf, alive, a little funny, a little sad, very optimistic. It is a book about the neighborhood, the city, the loving care. Someone would also describe it as a book for the environment. But it is more than that. It is a book about both: the environment and humanity."

"An author searches to find inspiration for her new book. She wants it to be a book with contemporary fables which will feature heroes, creators, and objects of our time. A dragon has come to find the author and complain to her on behalf of all the dragons of the old tales. Complain to her about what? About those writers who forget to place a dragon in their stories, one of those dragons that exhales flames and does all that other dragon jazz."

"Using the stories of Fotis and his friend as a vehicle, the author covers the last seven Olympic games. Fotis fosters a great love for football and athletics in general. Bitter humor describes today’s sporting ideals. The author touches upon the subject of hooliganism and violence at football match while a vivid family story is set up.
It is one of the most beautiful books of 1984, for children from 12 to 15 years old an unconventional illustration."

A MORNING WITH AESOP

Adapted myths with colorful illustration
edition: 1st-3rd
Year of Publication: 1995
Illustrator: Nikolas Andrikopoulos
Publisher: Patakis
ISBN: 960-360-492-5

"Angeliki Varella finds Aesop one morning in the National Gallery, takes him by the hand and strolls around Athens with him. The authors grabs the chance to make a comment on Aesop’s myths, to mock our own time, and to re-tell these stories in her own, humorous way, and then to…restore the image of Aesop himself as far as his ugliness is concerned. In the end of the book, she admits that his nose was the most beautiful nose that she had ever seen in her life, since “it is better to pay attention not to the appearance but to the mind”. It is a book with unique style. The illustration is also very fitting to the book’s sense of humor."

In these stories the writer, whether intentionally or not, follows and participates in the events on the football field and finds the opportunity to make pertinent observations.

"Angeliki Varella is an author who knows how to write with humor. Her work which has made her one of the most important authors in modern children’s literature, meanly deal with burning issues of everyday reality (ecology, violence etc.). At the same time she is also an author who loves the history of our country.
Angeliki Varella seems to tread on the ground of Crete, ignoring the chronological barriers. Whatever she encounters there, has to do with mythology, with history, with the legends and the local myths of the island. And it is with those she “talks”, since they are people who have left their mark on the Greek civilization in the past. Dedalus and Icaros, Theseas, the Minotaur, Ariadne and Zeus and Europe…"

This book has been included in 2001 IBBY catalogue of selected books for children with disabilities.

"In this story, a family adopts a child, Helias, who as he grows up, they discover that he cannot walk. Helias in his effort to overcome the problem, visits the river often and he talks to the shoes that come down from it, every time. So…he makes up stories that travel in the shoes! This a very original story, where fantasy is exquisitely intertwined with reality. The author deals with important issues (of adoption and of the people with special needs), without making the mistake of being melodramatic, but with realism and simplicity, wherever necessary; with a language that is above all poetical and full of knowledge for the children, with tenderness and a subtle sense of humor and liveliness, she offers a magnificent story to the children that is full of love for people and their problems."

"What is most impressive is that Angeliki Varella not only narrates the facts in a lively and pleasing way, nor does she stay in fascinating description but she also faces mythology with a critical eye, she comments, she analyses it psychologically, she takes it even further to the modern era, revealing the everlasting value of the ancient Greek myths. Thus, the persons in the narration, that seem lost in the haze and vagueness of the myth, become figures full of life, incredibly modern and familiar to us."

"This is a story written by one of the most well-known authors of children’s books in Greece.
Have you ever heard of a hare as a pet? In reading this book, you will meet one: one that lives in an apartment with a university lectures and reads…literature, watches television, drinks coffee and, of course, gives great pleasure to his masters, who adore it. In other words, it has everything. So why did it once leave? Was it by chance, or in answer to nature’s call?"
